Steam stats: 6- and 8-core CPUs will soon overtake 2- and 4-cores
03.04.2021 [12:39],
Konstantin Khodakovsky

The day has finally arrived when 6- and 8-core processors are ready to overtake 2- and 4-core processors in terms of the installation base of gaming PCs. Through research on Steam hardware, we can get reasonably accurate information about how popular AMD and Intel multi-core processors have become over the past few years.

JCET Group

The huge surge in the popularity of six- and eight-core processors is due in part to AMD’s strategy over the past few years to use as many cores as possible in both desktop and mobile Zen-based platforms. Intel was forced to follow the example of a competitor.

At the moment, the Steam chart shows that 4-core processors are still in the lead, accounting for just over 40%, while 6-cores account for about 30%. Since the end of 20021, the popularity of 6-core processors has been steadily growing, such chips surpassed dual-core CPUs in terms of installation base back in 2021.

Over the past few years in the desktop market, the six-core AMD and Intel processors have become some of the most popular for their excellent price-performance ratio and excellent gaming performance. In addition, the recent rise in the number of mobile six-core processors in both AMD and Intel’s arsenal has greatly accelerated the adoption of such solutions, as laptops generally have a much larger market share than desktop PCs.

If current trends continue, the popularity of 6-core and 4-core CPUs will equalize towards the end of the year, and 6-core CPUs will continue to gain popularity until 2022.

As for eight-core processors, their popularity is definitely lower than that of six-core. However, their installation base is still growing, moreover, very vigorously. Their share began to grow rapidly in late 20221, with the launch of the Coffee Lake Refresh processors and the first-ever massive Intel 8-core processor, the Core i9-9900K. At the same time, AMD released a new eight-core Ryzen 7 2700X chip based on the Zen + architecture — it was also very popular. In addition, in 20221, Intel first introduced mobile 8-core chips, and less than a year later AMD followed suit.

At the moment, 8-core chips on the installation base go hand in hand with 2-core ones and are about to be overtaken. However, their share is still far from the 4-core ones, which are still the leaders. From the end of 20221 to 2021, eight-core chips took about 5-6% of the installation base according to Steam statistics. But in the period 2021-2021.r. this indicator has changed to almost 15%, and there is a linear growth.

Overall, it’s good to see quad-core and dual-core processors finally withering away as their capabilities are no longer sufficient in a world heading for more and more multi-threaded workloads.
