American scientists on a number of military programs are developing new strains of bacteria to determine harmful substances in the environment. For example, such living sensors can detect heavy metals in drinking water. But there is still a risk of leakage of genetically modified material into wildlife, which is fraught with many dangers. Researchers at MIT have developed technology to avoid this threat.

For obvious reasons, glass, plastic and other similar materials are not suitable for enclosing bacteria-sensors in them. Walls made of such materials will not let bacteria out, but they will not allow the environment to penetrate, which simply will not allow the sensor to work. Therefore, a specially synthesized hydrogel was proposed as a material for encapsulation of genetically modified bacteria.
