Swedish scientists have made a breakthrough in the field of «massless» batteries

Batteries in future electric vehicles, smartphones, electric airplanes and other devices can become conditionally weightless without losing the ability to store energy. There is no magic in it. If the battery is made an integral part of the case or other structural part of the structure, then its weight can be simply ignored. This approach will eliminate the need for a separate battery in the device, making the product lighter and smaller. And this is not fiction.

Two years ago, Swedish scientists from Chalmers University of Technology announced the development of a structural battery made of a composite carbon material, the body of which can withstand physical stress that would destroy a conventional lithium battery. Then this invention was named the largest scientific achievement of the year by Physics World. And recently it became known that in two years, scientists were able to improve the aggregate characteristics of their battery tenfold.

So, if the development of 20221 was characterized by a modulus of longitudinal elasticity at the level of 25 GPa, then the new battery keeps this indicator at the level of 75 GPa. This means that in terms of mechanical strength, the structural battery has risen from an average between lead and tin to duralumin. In fact, you can make an airplane body from a new battery, and this body itself will be a battery. What room for designers! But this is a weight reduction that can be converted into speed or range.

Alas, the problems with structural Swedish batteries are rooted in very low energy density. The 20221 development boasted a density of only 24 Wh / kg. But two years of research were able to improve this parameter to 75 Wh / kg. This is about four times inferior to the capabilities of modern mass lithium batteries, but this element will not weigh anything as part of the device. Almost nothing.

In a «massless» carbon fiber battery, even electrodes and electrolyte play the role of a supporting (structural) structure. More precisely, the glass cloth is impregnated with electrolyte, which separates the electrodes and also strengthens the battery. The cathode of such a battery is made of carbon, and the anode is made of a foil made of a compound of lithium and phosphate-iron.

In the future, scientists plan to make an anode out of carbon, further increasing the strength of the battery. It is also planned to make thinner electrolyte-impregnated separating fiberglass. This will additionally increase operating currents and charge rates. There is room for development and this is a very interesting direction.
