Elon Musk sees the future of electric cars in cheap LFP batteries — the problem of working in the cold can be solved
Cobalt-Free Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) Batteries Promoted by Elon Musk Recently Fueled Explosive Growth in China’s Electric Vehicle Market. However, these batteries still have questions regarding range and performance in cold weather. For the full distribution of such batteries, you need to learn how to control the temperature regime, and work in this direction is already underway.
LFP batteries have lower fire risks and are significantly cheaper than lithium-ion batteries because they use iron instead of scarce cobalt or nickel. But they usually offer a shorter range and perform poorly in cold weather, so they are not widely used in electric vehicles sold in the US or Europe.
In China last year, LFP battery manufacturers supplied 30.8 gigawatt-hours of cells for vehicles including EVs and hybrids — 47% of the car battery market. This has led to the emergence of inexpensive mass-produced electric vehicles, which are booming in China. For comparison: in 2021, the share of such batteries was just over a quarter.
«China is leading the way in terms of production, quality and cost of the current generation of LFP batteries,» said Chao-Yang Wang, a professor and battery expert at Pennsylvania State University, confident in the potential of this type of battery for electric cars.

Tesla is also trying to solve the problem of shortage of batteries. The company begins mass production of 4680 cells, in which it has abandoned the more expensive cobalt in favor of nickel. And in some versions of its Chinese sedans, Model 3 even switched to LFP (such models are not sold in the USA). At the end of February, the head of Tesla said that the shortage of nickel is the main problem in increasing the production of battery cells. He wrote that he wants to use cheaper materials in the battery cathode. “Nickel is our biggest challenge for scaling up lithium-ion cell manufacturing. That’s why we are converting vehicles with standard mileage to iron cathode. Lots of iron (and lithium)!»- he wrote.
One of China’s biggest car hits in recent times is the Hongguang Mini electric car, which uses LFP batteries to keep costs down. Created by a Chinese company, in which General Motors owns 44% of the shares, the car is sold for only $ 4,300 for the base model (range of different models — 120-170 km). The car uses batteries from Chinese manufacturers Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) and Gotion High-tech. In the first two months of 2021 alone, the Hongguang Mini sold 57,000 units in China — roughly double the number of Tesla Model 3s sold in the same market. Hongguang reported on social media last year that LFP batteries offer good value for money and have a longer life compared to lithium-ion batteries used in the West.
The traditional criticism of LFP batteries is that they can store noticeably less energy than lithium-ion batteries that use cobalt and nickel. American and European automakers are prioritizing larger batteries, which allow the car to travel more than 500 km on a single charge, in an effort to overcome the concerns of potential electric car customers.

Tesla said last year it will look to harness LFP batteries as technology advances to provide greater range. In March, Volkswagen AG said it had selected LFP as the leading technology for entry-level vehicles. But besides Tesla, American manufacturers usually don’t use this technology because they have invested heavily in other types of batteries.
Battery experts say CATL and other Chinese battery makers like BYD are trying to tackle LFP undercapacity as well as other weaknesses. BYD, which is investing in Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway, says its «blade accumulator» has an optimized battery pack structure to increase energy density.
But temperature remains the key issue. Decrease in performance at low temperatures is typical for all electric vehicles in general, but is especially pronounced in the case of models based on LFP. For example, 46-year-old Shanghai resident Peggy Weng, whom WSJ spoke to, bought a Tesla Model 3 with LFP batteries in late November, but decided to sell the car less than 3 months later. The trouble began in early January when the temperature dropped to -30 ° C. Lacking high-speed chargers in her apartment complex, she used her home power grid. Although she had to travel only to work and around the city, the car owner had to constantly worry about the batteries. Once, in severe frosts, the car simply stopped in the middle of the road for more than 10 minutes. “I feel insecure when driving a car that behaves this way,” she said. She bought an Xpeng P7 electric car based on conventional lithium-ion batteries and was quite happy with it.

Scientists in Japan and the United States have been actively researching lithium-ion battery technology since the 1990s. When China was looking to catch up in the 2000s, the bet was placed on LFP — an option that simply proved to be easier for the country because such batteries are less susceptible to fire and, as a result, do not require too high safety standards.
University of Tokyo professor Atsuo Yamada, who has been studying LFP batteries for over 20 years, is convinced that this technology has the potential to become a leader in the electric vehicle market. As advantages, he named low cost, fast charging speed, long service life and stable operation at high temperatures. At the same time, according to him, the problem of operation in cold weather can be solved with the help of a more efficient temperature control system.
The already mentioned professor of the University of Pennsylvania Chao-Yang Wang and his colleagues published an article in the journal Nature Energy demonstrating the technology of self-heating LFP batteries capable of charging normally in any climatic conditions.
Chinese electric vehicle maker Xpeng, with investors in Alibaba Group Holding and Sequoia Capital, has unveiled LFP-based versions of its P7 sedan and G3 compact sport utility vehicle. Xpeng keeps the price the same for different battery types, but the LFP versions come with additional features like improved driver assistance.
