SpaceX has named the crew members of the space mission Inspiration4 — there are no astronauts among them
In February of this year, SpaceX announced plans to launch Inspiration4, «the world’s first fully civilian space mission.». Inspiration4 will take place in September, and now the names of the last two crew members after the last online competition have been announced.
The first new member of the mission is geology and communications specialist Dr. Sian Proctor. Her father worked at NASA, and she herself went through four simulations of space missions on simulators. She is interested in Mars, has written a book of recipes for Martian food, was a finalist for the NASA Astronaut 2021 program, has a pilot’s license, diving certification and loves to explore the world around her. She taught geosciences for 20 years at South Mountain Community College in Phoenix, Arizona.
The second is a Lockheed Martin employee and veteran of the United States Air Force Christopher Sembroski, who has been interested in space since childhood, worked as a space camp consultant; as a college student, volunteered at ProSpace to promote space travel and private space; he served in the United States Air Force serving the Minuteman 111 ICBM fleet; served in Iraq and retired in 2021. Received a BA in Aeronautics from Embry-Riddle Aviation University. He currently resides in Seattle, Washington, and works in the aerospace industry.
The commander of the SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft, as it was already known, will be American billionaire Jared Isaacman, founder and CEO of Shift4 Payments, who pays for the entire mission.
Last month, the first crew member was Hayley Arceneaux, who survived bone cancer with treatment at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (chemotherapy and limb-sparing surgery). After completing treatment, she is doing well, earning her Bachelor of Arts in Spanish in 2021 and her Physician Assistant (PA) in 2021. She now works at the same St. Jude Hospital with patients with leukemia and lymphoma.
The mission is raising funds to support this medical facility and has raised $ 113 million to date. Inspiration4, according to plans, will take place no earlier than September 15.
A crew of four takes off on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and takes off in the Crew Dragon into Earth orbit. It is expected that the flight will last three days, and the altitude will be about 540 kilometers — people have not flown that far for a long time (the altitude of the ISS orbit varies in the range of 340-417 km). By the way, the mission will use the new Crew Dragon spacecraft of a special design, in which the docking lock with the ISS will be replaced with a glass dome.
