No collusion between Intel and NVIDIA: Ryzen processors didn’t make it into gaming laptops for another reason
In recent months, a conspiracy theory has circulated in various industry forums that Intel and NVIDIA have made a secret deal with each other to prevent the use of high-performance GPUs in AMD laptops with Ryzen 4000 series processors.
If you look at the list of AMD laptops released last year, it’s easy to believe. ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14, Lenovo Legion 5 and others came with an AMD processor and an NVIDIA graphics card, and no higher than RTX 2060. Conspiracy theory says the reason for this is the confrontation between Intel, AMD and NVIDIA. But it is enough to delve into the question a little to understand: there is no scandal, the whole point is in how processors work with video cards.
In April 2021, AMD Chief Gaming and Marketing Architect Frank Azor tweeted a question about the lack of high-performance GPUs in AMD laptops: «You will have to ask this question to your preferred OEMs and PC builders.». Around that time, the conspiracy theory began to take shape, and Azor was right: the OEMs form the laptop configurations, not the suppliers of processors or video cards. These configurations are usually determined by cost and common sense. An underpowered processor and a powerful graphics card is not the best bundle, and this is the trap that processors like the Ryzen 9 4900HS or lower fall into.
In May 2021, Mr. Azor even met with The Full Nerd to discuss the problem — he considered that it was a matter of manufacturers’ distrust of Ryzen processors: “I think the Ryzen 4000 exceeded all expectations, but for the most part, everyone decided to proceed with caution. Of course, the official denials may not convince someone, but in fact, mobile Ryzen 4000 were never created as gaming processors. There are three elements in the AMD Ryzen 4000 series that could have influenced OEMs’ decisions not to complement such processors with flagship graphics cards. These are PCIe limits (total of 8 PCIe lanes 3.0 for a discrete accelerator versus 16 for Intel), a smaller amount of L3 cache and the most obvious — lower performance in single-threaded mode compared to Intel Core 10th generation.
It is worth saying that even now in gaming tests, the 10th Gen Core i9-10900K desktop processor is not inferior to the newer Ryzen 9 5950X from AMD, when both work in conjunction with a GeForce RTX 3080. Roughly the same situation is observed in the mobile market.
For example, AMD Ryzen 9 4900HS in ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 shows weaker single-core performance than Intel Core i7-10875H in MSI Creator 15. At the same time, the Core i7-10875H is not the flagship of the Intel mobile processor family, unlike the Ryzen 9 4900HS. Even on an average NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 graphics card, a system with an Intel processor is on average slightly faster than AMD. A bundle of Ryzen 9 4900HS with a more powerful accelerator, most likely, would behave even worse.
According to the tests of the resource Gizmodo, the use of 8 or 16 PCIe lanes 3.0 on the mobile RTX 2060 graphics have almost no effect on performance in most games, but on more high-end graphics cards like the RTX 2070 Super, the frame rate increases when using 16 lines in a number of tests and popular projects.
