Micron Launches Record-Dense 1α RAM

Coming soon, DDR4 DRAM for PCs will be available in today’s most advanced manufacturing process, which Micron calls 1α (alpha). One of the Taiwanese factories of the company was engaged in the release of 8-Gbit and 16-Gbit DDR4 chips using the 1α process technology. The novelty promises to increase the density of memory cells (reduce the size of the die), reduce power consumption and increase bandwidth — everything we love.

Starting with the 30nm process technology, memory manufacturers have ceased to indicate the exact technological standards for the manufacture of chips. The designations of the classes were born: 20-nm and 10-nm classes, within which memory manufacturers produced microcircuits with technological standards from 28 nm to 13 nm. When it came to chips of the 10nm class, the designations 1x, 1y and 1z were used. According to rumors, Micron was able to master the smallest geometric dimensions in the manufacture of memory and its 1z process technology corresponded to 13nm technological standards.

But the Latin alphabet is over, and the 10nm class of products is not yet. The company is now mastering Greek. Today she announced the start of mass production of memory using the 1α process technology. According to a press release, the density of memory cells has increased by 40%, which means another step down the scale of decreasing technological standards, although Micron again does not give exact numbers.

It is noteworthy that the company is again releasing memory based on the 1α process technology using the classic 193-nm DUV laser using immersion lithography (using a liquid between the optics and the crystal), which requires four projections for each critical layer. Before the transition to EUV scanners with a wavelength of 13.5 nm, the release of at least one more generation of memory under the codename 1β (beta) will be mastered. DUV scanners are more costly to use, but the initial cost of EUV scanners and associated costs would be enormous. EUV time for Micron has not come yet.

“Our new DRAM 1α technology will enable the lowest power mobile DRAM in the industry, while also bringing the benefits of our DRAM portfolio to data centers, customers, consumers, industrial and automotive customers,” said Sumit Sadana, executive vice President and Chief Commercial Officer Micron.

This year, using the 1α process technology, the company will launch the entire range of memory products, from mobile applications to data centers. It will be memory for computers, video cards, smartphones, smart cars and many other applications. Specifically, Micron has begun shipping samples of LPDDR4 chips released using the 1α process technology.
