Cybercrime soars by almost 70% in 2021 — cybercriminals have earned more than $ 4 billion
The FBI Internet Crime Complaints Center (IC3) received 791,790 statements from the American public in 2021 related to various types of cybercrimes. This is a 69% increase compared to the number of applications in 2021. At the same time, total losses from cybercrime in the reporting period amounted to $ 4.1 billion.
For several years now, one of the main activities of cybercriminals has been associated with the compromise of e-mail boxes of private clients and organizations. Business representatives filed 19,369 complaints with IC3 about the problem of Business Email Compromise, and the total losses from this activity of attackers amounted to $ 1.8 billion. The number of reported phishing cases has grown significantly. In 2021, the agency received 241,342 complaints about incidents related to phishing, while in 2021 there were only 114,702 complaints of this type. There is also a continuing rise in ransomware complaints. Last year, 2,474 complaints were received on this issue.
Typically, compromised mailboxes are used to send fake emails on behalf of the victimized employee internally and externally, such as business partners. The purpose of such fraud most often boils down to extracting monetary gain by, for example, issuing supposedly legitimate invoices to pay for something, indicating fake invoices.
Experts note that in recent years, the area of activity of cybercriminals related to the compromise of mailboxes of corporate users (BEC) has undergone significant development. If earlier scammers transferred stolen money to their accounts, now stolen identities are more often used for this, and funds from such accounts are subsequently converted into cryptocurrency.
