The newest Russian superconducting electric rocket engine has passed bench tests

The Russian private company «SuperOx», working in the field of high-temperature superconductivity, in cooperation with the Department of Plasma Physics of NRNU MEPhI has created and completed bench tests of an electric rocket engine with an efficiency of 54%. According to the company, it will reduce the cost of launching and delivering spacecraft to target orbits, making space more accessible.

During a three-year project, the company demonstrated for the first time that superconductivity can be used to create space technology with great practical effect. Such an engine could become a key element of spacecraft or upper stages designed for exploration of the Moon, Mars and deep space.

The engine uses the principle of plasma acceleration by an external magnetic field created by superconductors. The use of the latter made it possible to achieve record performance. The created sample of a superconducting electric propulsion engine can offer a power of tens of kilowatts. For comparison: electric propulsion engines used in space technology today rarely have a power higher than 10 kW.

To create thrust in the engine, an inert gas converted into plasma is used, which is accelerated by an electromagnetic field. It uses 10 times less fuel (by weight) than «chemical» jet engines. This will allow for longer operation and increase the service life of potential spacecraft.

The use of superconductivity has made it possible to achieve practical results that are essential for application in space:

  • the mass of the magnet is reduced by 4 times relative to the copper analogue;
  • the dimensions of the magnetic system are reduced by 3 times;
  • the power consumption of the magnet is reduced by more than 20 times in comparison with the copper analogue;
  • the value of the engine efficiency is 54%;
  • it is shown that the use of a magnetic field increases the efficiency of the engine by 7 times, and the specific impulse and thrust — 3 times.
