SpaceX launches another 60 Starlink satellites, but fails to return the rocket
sixteen.02.2021 [09:59],
Konstantin Khodakovsky

SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket launched another batch of 60 Starlink Internet satellites into low Earth orbit this morning, but failed to land on a floating platform at sea.

Falcon 9 two-stage booster took off from space launch complex 40 at Cape Canaveral at 6:59 am Moscow time. Approximately nine minutes later, the first stage of the rocket returned to Earth for a sixth landing on SpaceX’s unmanned barge in the Atlantic Ocean, but missed.

“It looks like we didn’t land on the ‘Of course I still love you’ rocket today,” said SpaceX Process Engineer Jessica Anderson, commenting on the launch live. — It is a pity that this accelerator could not be returned, but our second stage is still on a given trajectory. «. SpaceX is keen to return the first stages of its Falcon 9 rockets for reuse, but the company has repeatedly stated that getting the payload into orbit is always a top priority.

SpaceX was originally scheduled to launch on Monday morning, but bad weather has delayed it. According to the plan, this was the last mission of one of the frequently used first stages of the Falcon 9 B1059. It has previously delivered cargo in a Dragon capsule to the International Space Station twice (CRS-19 in December 2021 and CRS-20 in March 2021), performed the Starlink mission in June last year, and launched an Earth observation satellite for Argentina (SAOCOM- 1B in August 2021) and a spy satellite for the US government as part of the NROL-108 mission in December.

Today’s launch was the first of two planned Starlink missions during the week — another 60 satellites are due to go into orbit on Wednesday 17 February on another Falcon 9 rocket. This fast sequence is due to the fact that SpaceX had to change the schedule of Starlink missions somewhat due to problems related to both weather and equipment.

Today’s mission, dubbed Starlink 19, has been sped up after Starlink 18 kicked off on February 4th. Both flights overtook the Starlink 17 mission, which was originally scheduled to launch on February 1st. Starlink 17 is slated to be delivered to orbit via another commonly used accelerator, B1049 — the mission has been postponed several times and is now set to take place on February 17.

SpaceX originally planned to launch two Starlink missions just hours apart — something like this would have happened for the first time in Florida since 1966, when the Gemini rocket was followed by Atlas Agena just 99 minutes later. We’ll probably see a double launch later, because the launch frequency of SpaceX’s rockets is increasing. Last year, 31 launches were made from the coast of Florida, and this is expected to be at least 40.

The past Starlink mission is the 108th launch for SpaceX’s «workhorse» Falcon 9. It could also be the 75th rocket comeback if everything went according to plan. Thanks to today’s launch, SpaceX now has over 1,000 Starlink satellites in orbit. But there are still many launches ahead: the SpaceX Starlink launch constellation will consist of 1,440 satellites, and the company has requested approval for tens of thousands more devices. The company has already started offering satellite Internet services to everyone as part of beta testing (subject to availability).

By the way, there are now two networked SpaceX boats named GO Ms in the Atlantic. Tree and GO Ms. Chief — they will be engaged in fishing out two parts of the rocket nose cone for later reuse. Sometimes SpaceX catches falling fairings right in the air, but it depends on the wind and weather.
