Scientists from the USA have proposed a new source of single photons for quantum cryptography, qubits and more
Researchers at Los Alamos National Laboratory have created a new class of quantum dots with potentially great potential for medical imaging, quantum cryptography and quantum computing. The uniqueness of the design lies in the fact that spectrally pure single photons are emitted at room temperature in a widely tuned wavelength range.

To create quantum dots that emit single photons, scientists used the synthesis in a solution of colloidal nanoparticles. The quantum dots obtained in the course of chemical processes are a cadmium selenide core in a cadmium sulfide shell. To convert such structures into emitters of single photons, the researchers inserted a layer of mercury sulfide between the shell and the core. It turned out that a simple increase in the thickness of the interlayer discretely changes the wavelength of the photon radiation.
“This new synthesis allows the thickness of the radiating interlayer of mercury sulfide to be precisely controlled at the atomic level. By changing it with a step of one atomic layer, we can adjust the wavelength of the emitted light by discrete quantum jumps and then smoothly adjust it, changing the size of the cadmium selenide nucleus, ”said Vladimir Saevich, lead chemist of the project.
New structures are far superior to existing near-infrared quantum dots. They exhibit even single-point emission of near-perfect single-photon purity at room temperature. This stable behavior is well preserved under both optical and electrical excitation.
A practical application of the development can be medical imaging, which will allow a deeper and safer look into the depths of human tissues, quantum cryptography, which requires fast and high-quality sources of single photons to distribute quantum keys, quantum computers in which photons play the role of qubits, marking to protect against counterfeiting, etc. a number of other applications.
But don’t expect immediate breakouts. Scientists explain that it is still necessary to achieve indistinguishability of photons — to make sure that single photons emitted by different quantum dots on the substrate are identical in their quantum mechanical properties. The researchers will do this in the next stage of the work.
