Russian physicists have discovered a new principle of quantum switching for electronics — this can extend the life of Moore’s law
Theoretical work on the study of quantum contacts in an external oscillating electromagnetic field led to an interesting discovery that could form the basis of future nanoelectronics. The identified processes can be used in the production of electronic circuits with «transistors» of atomic size. It may happen that Moore’s Law will be given life at the quantum level.
A group of Russian physicists, together with their foreign colleagues, published the results of a theoretical study of quantum contacts in an external oscillating field in the journal Physical Review B with the support of the Russian Science Foundation (RSF).
The quantum contacts in question are very, very small two-dimensional point junctions between two conductors. The dimensions of such contacts are no more than several electron wavelengths, which is comparable to the dimensions of an atom. Such a contact can be created using a two-dimensional electron gas, if it is placed between two massive conductors. Electrons in such a gas can only move freely in two directions.
To reduce the size of the contact to an even smaller size, the electron gas is influenced by an external blocking electromagnetic field, and the stronger the potential at the gate, the narrower the contact. This solves the problem of creating such a small contact between the conductors (transition in the form of a two-dimensional region) that interesting quantum phenomena begin to appear in it.
One of such phenomena was that the flow of electrons through a point quantum contact from one conductor to another — the potential equalization process — turned out to be controllable and this control is easy to implement. Physicists theoretically deduced that if you increase the frequency of the external electromagnetic field inside which the contact is located, then at a certain frequency value, the current through the contact stops flowing. It is as if the connecting pipe was shaken in two communicating vessels with different water levels, and the water would stop flowing into the container with a lower level. At the macro level it is impossible to imagine, but at the quantum level it may well work.
