IFixit researches stick drift in DualSense controllers: lifespan is only 420 hours
A new video of the popular iFixit tech team disassembling DualSense is intended to answer the question of where stick drift comes from in this and other controllers. The experts also concluded that the analog sticks of the PS5 have a lifespan of only about 417 hours.
According to the video, DualSense uses the same off-the-shelf joystick hardware as other controllers for popular gaming platforms including PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch. Users of each of these platforms have also experienced stick drift, with class action lawsuits for Joy-Con and Xbox controllers already being filed in the past. DualSense is just the latest example.
IFixit specialists turned to the documentation of ALPS — the manufacturer of the sticks used in various controllers. Data from this company reports that stick potentiometers have an expected life of 2,000,000 cycles, while the center-press function (when the stick clicks) is rated for 500,000 cycles.
The iFixit team decided to simply count the number of cycles when playing the shooter Call of Duty: Warzone. According to their estimates, the service life will be exhausted in 417 hours. Of course, this figure can vary greatly depending on the type of game and the dynamics of the gameplay. But if you rely on this number, then a PS5 owner using his console for two hours a day will technically exceed the expected life of the controller in 7 months — it is understandable why the number of complaints is growing.
According to iFixit analysis, potentiometer wear caused by normal controller use is the most common cause of stick drift. The same is stated in the class action lawsuits against Sony and other manufacturers. However, iFixit also noted that prolonged use of the controller can also stretch the springs inside the stick block, which determine its neutral point, after which contaminants such as dust can also cause drift.
As a result, iFixit gives advice to those who have encountered a similar problem: “Fix the problem yourself or through an experienced technician; if the controller is still under warranty, you can send it to the manufacturer for repair. If none of the options suits you, you will have to buy a new one. After this research, it seems strange to us that console manufacturers do not consider sticks to be consumables and do not design controllers so that these components can be easily replaced by themselves. No device designed for a limited number of actions, especially one that is in an aggressive environment near a large amount of pollution and undergoes a heavy load, can work perfectly forever «.
Controller drift class action lawsuits allege Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo are aware of a problem with their controllers, but are defrauding consumers by continuing to sell affected devices.
