The frosts that hit the southern United States have demonstrated the vulnerability of alternative energy, but icing of generator blades is just one of the problems posed by weather conditions. High wind speeds force such systems to suspend power generation for safety reasons. Japanese experts have found a solution to this problem.

As noted by the Nikkei Asian Review, Japan’s Challenergy has developed turbines for power generation that can withstand wind speeds of up to 40 m / s versus the 25 m / s inherent in traditional vane-based generators. Structurally, the turbines of the Magnus VAWT family have the following feature — due to the wind energy, not the blades rotate, but vertically oriented cylinders with higher dynamic stability. Back in August 2021, Challenergy launched an experimental 10 kW wind turbine on one of the Japanese islands. The Japanese company intends to start commercial deliveries of turbines by the end of this year.

The electricity it generates turns out to be twice as expensive as that obtained using traditional wind turbines. Installations of the new type also have limitations in terms of maximum power. The manufacturer intends to occupy a market niche associated with providing electricity to remote islands that are not connected to the power grid. In this case, the use of wind turbines is still more profitable than the use of diesel generators. Typhoons often occur on island territories, which gives Challenergy turbines a definite competitive advantage.
This year the company expects to sell up to twenty power plants, next year it can be increased to 50-100 units. Challenergy expects to develop 100 kW turbines by 2025, as well as an offshore 1000 kW floating plant.
