CERN will build containers for the accumulation and transportation of antimatter
Thanks to science fiction, few people know about antimatter. And although it was experimentally discovered about 70 years ago, scientists know very little about antimatter. In the world around us, antimatter does not form on its own, and that obtained on accelerators is not stored and is difficult to study. To learn more about antimatter, CERN has launched a project to create containers for the accumulation and transport of antimatter.

At CERN, antimatter in the form of antiprotons is created by bombarding a metal target with a proton beam from a laboratory synchrotron. At the outlet of the installation, antiprotons have an energy of the order of 3500 MeV (millions of electron volts), so they are slowed down to slow or «cold» antiprotons, otherwise they are difficult to study. The antiproton moderator reduces the energy of these antiparticles to 5.3 MeV, which occurs due to the passage of the antiproton beam through a thin sheet of metal foil.
However, even this is not enough, therefore CERN in a special complex Extra Low ENergy Antiproton (ELENA) with a storage ring using plasma slows down antiprotons to 90 KeV. The disadvantage of the already created installations is that their performance is disastrously scanty. To create one nanogram of antimatter, for example, it would take thousands of years of installation.

Another problem remains that the place where antiprotons are produced is too “noisy” from background magnetic and electric fields from operating equipment. But it is not so easy to transfer antiprotons to another place for study. They should not come into contact with ordinary matter, otherwise annihilation will occur with the release of colossal amounts of energy and gamma radiation.
To accumulate and transport antimatter to other scientific objects for study, in particular, to the ISOLDE complex at CERN, a project has been launched to develop two experimental installations: BASE-STEP and PUMA. One of the installations will capture and release antiprotons, and the other will accumulate. The dimensions of the future storage system should allow transporting antimatter on a small truck.

The BASE-STEP device is a so-called Penning trap with a uniform static magnetic field and a spatially inhomogeneous electric field. The trap is cooled with liquid helium and must be adapted for transportation. The plant will be up to two meters long and weigh one ton. Antiproton storage — PUMA is a two-zone trap inside a one-tonne-tonne superconducting solenoid magnet, inside which a vacuum is created and the temperature is maintained up to four degrees above absolute zero. The field generated by the magnet will trap antiprotons, preventing them from contacting matter for a long period of time.
The commissioning of new equipment for the transportation and storage of antimatter is planned in 2023. Transportation will be carried out over short distances within the CERN complex. The study of antiprotons in the laboratory will help make many new scientific discoveries. There is no doubt about it.
