Volvo and Aurora team up to build self-driving trucks for North America
Volvo partners with start-up company Aurora to develop autopilot systems. Together the companies will create a family of fully autonomous tractors. Trucks to be deployed in North America on busiest point-to-point shipping routes.
The deal between Volvo Autonomous Solutions and Aurora, which was founded by former executives from Google, Tesla and Uber, is a long-term partnership spanning several years. This is another deal between a major automaker and a tech startup building an autopilot. The industry continues to move slowly towards a future where robotic vehicles and self-driving trucks should become the norm on the road.
Aurora has been testing its Aurora Driver firmware in a test fleet of Class 8 minivans and trucks in the Dallas-Fort Worth area since last year. Unlike its competitors, which are mainly focused on robotic taxis, the company announced that its first commercial service will be provided in the field of cargo transportation, where the market is currently the largest, the economic return is more obvious, and the level of service requirements is most acceptable.
“Building a viable self-driving truck for off-roading requires close collaboration with both customers and technology partners to develop the capabilities needed,” said Niels Jäger, President of Volvo Autonomous Solutions. «This exciting partnership brings our Transport as a Service goal one step further and accelerates the adoption of point-to-point commercial offerings in North America.».
Aurora has raised $ 690 million in funding to date, and co-founder and executive Chris Urmson has been recognized for his work that helped Google a lot with its robocars. Volvo, the second-largest manufacturer of heavy-duty trucks, is gradually adding driver-assistance features to its trucks, but has yet to make any deals to create fully self-driving vehicles. Long-haul freight transport is likely to be one of the first widespread applications of automated driving technology. At the same time, there are widespread fears in the industry that the introduction of autopilots will lead to massive layoffs of drivers. Already now, cargo platforms are being developed in which no driver’s cabin is provided at all.
