Japanese scientists discover photoelectric effect in materials that never had it. They can improve solar panels
Scientists at the University of Tokyo have discovered a photovoltaic effect in materials not previously seen as the basis for solar panels. It turned out that if some materials are folded in a certain way, then at their joints the incident light excites electrons, which causes an electric current to flow. The discovery allowed us to look at photo effects from a new and unexpected angle, which could lead to the emergence of new solar panels.

Researchers have studied so-called 2D materials, a well-known representative of which is graphene. Their attention was paid to black phosphorus (BP) and tungsten selenide (WSe2). Each of these materials does not exhibit photovoltaic properties, no matter how much you shine on it, but if one material is superimposed on another in a special way, then under the influence of light, an electric current begins to flow in it. Also, such a «sandwich» begins to demonstrate polarization, which is not the case for both materials separately
Most important of this discovery was that the resulting effect is different from and potentially superior to the photoelectric effect commonly found in known solar cells. Thus, there is hope for the creation of very, very efficient solar cells from materials that were not capable of the photoelectric effect. At least scientists have found another way to improve the efficiency of solar panels.
It should be noted that the interfaces of several 2D materials often exhibit properties that differ from those of individual crystals. Therefore, studying the properties of combinations of such materials is a conscious choice for research. The secret of the discovery of Japanese scientists is that they found the key to the right combination of materials. It turned out that the photoelectric effect in the case of superposition of black phosphorus on tungsten selenide occurs only when the lines of mirror symmetry of the crystal structures of each of them coincide in a given way (black phosphorus has one symmetry line, and tungsten selenide has three of them).
